News

As the sunlight diminishes and the snow begins to dust the mountaintops, I guess it’s fair to say winter is looming. By now the rainbow and brown will have begun the trip to their chosen spawning areas, as nature repeats itself for another season.

Now it’s time for guides like myself to repair gear, scope out new areas and plan for next season. Reflecting back on last season, we experienced a rather windy, cool summer unlike the previous one which was calm and very hot. Now we did get some hot days and I’m sure those who came and experienced our wilderness campsite can vouch for the intensity in the sun’s rays.

My old favorite resident trout did their best to be seen, but on occasions were picky on their patterns to feed upon. Perseverance is the key! Quantity is not in a New Zealander’s fishing vocabulary; but quality is, as you can see by the photos in our fishing section. Well done guys/girls and they all get to swim for another year.

During November/December 1999 we got a heap of rain and some serious flooding occurred, which washed out banks and deposited uprooted trees into the rivers. Some areas previously ‘unfishable’ due to inaccessibility are now prime holes. One such fishing hole holds in excess of twenty (20!) fish, all in the five pound plus category! So, floods can be constructive as well as destructive, as on this occasion the flooding had a positive impact on some rivers. A lot of tree debris was floating in the lake for several weeks afterward, but our kayaking expeditions were unhindered by it.

For those of you who’d prefer to have all your flies pre-tied and pre-purchased as you depart home for your journey to New Zealand, we’ve now a great lead for flies from a past client in Massachusetts. Dave has first-hand knowledge of the popular patterns and has fished with us and knows about our trophy fish. Contact me for his details via the contact pages of this web site.

Well as I write this, my family and I are making our way north to Auckland, then onto the USA from June to October for marketing and a wee holiday. After which we’ll return to New Zealand for another great season in the bush. Come join us and have some fun! Tighten the line! Wet the net! And ultimately savor the success of a trophy fish.

Stay tuned for future updates on our other offerings, as we’ll periodically add information here in this section of the web site.

All the Best –

Kevin and Dawn
